Create a Volcano in After Effects

Let’s blow up this mountain. Here’s how to create a volcano in After Effects.

You know that part of you that is obsessed with lava? The part that can’t stop watching people poke lava with sticks? Or drop hot nickel balls on stuff? Well today that part of you is in luck. In this After Effects tutorial I’m going to show you how to create a volcano in After Effects.

This tutorial will take a look at a few different techniques. The biggest technique being tracking objects into 3D space. While it may seem easy to just throw 3D Camera Tracker onto an orange shape and call it a day there is quite a few different things we can do to the lava to make it more realistic. Namely, by perfecting the color can composite we can make the lave more realistic in the scene.

So if you’re ready to unleash your inner child here’s how to create a volcano in After Effects.

Create an Ocean in After Effects

I'll show you how to create in ocean in this After Effects tutorial.

Creating water in After Effects isn't easy. This is mainly because After Effects isn't the right software for creating realistic water dynamics. When someone wants to create water for a high budget film they usually turn to a dynamics driven software like Houdini to simulate liquid. However, this doesn't mean that you can't simulate water at all in After Effects.

In this tutorial I'm going to show you how to create an ocean in After Effects. This tutorial will show you everything you need to know to create psuedo-realistic water using various tools and effects that are built into After Effects.

As with every tutorial on the site I'm giving away the project files so you can mess around and dissect my work. Just fill out the box below and you will be directed to a download window.

Create a Saturn Space Scene in After Effects

Create, animate, and stylize a Saturn space scene in this After Effects tutorial.

In this After Effects tutorial we’re going to be creating a cool saturn space scene. This tutorial will show you everything you need to know to create the 3D rings, planet, and stars in the background. There are a lot of really cool techniques used in this After Effects project, but my favorite is how we can use the Polar Coordinates effect to create the rings in like 5 seconds.

Another really cool effect that I utilized in this tutorial is using a fractal noise overlay to simulate the dust of the stars in the background. I find that using the fractal noise effect for background elements really helps make the overall scene look organic.

To create the Saturn effect you will need a copy of Adobe After Effects CS6 or higher. Which shouldn’t be a problem for most After Effects users. The tutorial also uses actual texture mattes from NASA so the rings will look pretty darn close to the real thing.

Create a 3D DNA Strand in After Effects

In this After Effects tutorial we're going to learn how to create a 3D DNA strand using only the free tools and effects available in After Effects, no plugins required!

The cool takeaway from this tutorial is the fact that if you select the 'continuous rasterize' button your 3D properties will be retained throughout your composition. This is a great way to keep your projects organized!

You can download the free follow-along project file below. Here's the video. Enjoy!
